Uncharted Waters is a Koei game where you can be a merchant/explorer sometime between the 15th and 17th centuries. It runs somewhat like other Koei games, but with some exceptions. It is menu driven and essentially turn-based, but you can actually disembark and walk around for a bit. The interface for this is mostly like Dragon Warrior I. There are also some sub-games where you can gamble by playing card games. Played as intended, the game is an innocent celebration of the Age of Exploration, where you can become rich and powerful, and then woo and rescue a stereotypical princess.
Played not as intended, it can be somewhat amusing. For instance, it is possible for your charismatic and dashing captain to flake out and order everyone to blithely sail along until your merry, smiling crew dies of starvation. There likely won't be any protest about it all, aside from some "by the way" notice that you are out of food. You are also free to set sail for the Arctic or Antarctic and probably die there too. You can also spend hours obsessing over menus. The graphics and sound are nothing special at all, but the open-ended nature of the game is a good reason to try it out.
