Double Dribble is a classic because it was for a long time the best action-oriented sports game available for consoles. It was a very long time before a better basketball game was available for the NES. This game may not hold up when compared to the late NES basketball games or the SNES games, but nostalgic fans will still love it.
This game is not exactly true to basketball, but comes much closer than previous games. The sounds and music are usually not annoying (remember: pressing Select cancels the opening anthem). The game's best features include passing, steals on defense, slow-motion close up slam-dunks, and 3 teams with different strengths.
Shooting requires a special finesse that is difficult to define but easy to recognize. The computer will initially blow you out, but eventually even the level 3 computer will not be able to beat you when you learn its patterns. Versus mode is by far the best part of this game, and it makes for one of the best NES sports games experiences.
The weaknesses of the game include some difficulty selecting the right player on defense. Sometimes your players will do strange things, such as standing out of bounds.
Some criticisms that I have read about this game are completely invalid. For instance, the title screen features correct spelling. Other criticisms unfairly compare it against games at least 4 years newer.
